Overview
Openreach have been extending their fibre broadband network around the Borgue area in 2023 and fibre broadband via “Fibre to the Premises” (FTTP) is now available throughout most of the Borgue peninsula. Properties in and close to Borgue village were upgraded in 2019 and are connected via “Fibre to the Cabinet” (FTTC) technology which gives high speed broadband connections but cannot reach the same speeds as FTTP. Openreach have published a link to companies that can offer fibre broadband services.
You can view and compare the available broadband services on the Uswitch web site. Other service offerings may also be available, e.g. additional bundled packages such as Sports, Netflix, Apple TV or Disney+ from companies like BT, Sky or Vodaphone. Some providers also offer bundled packages including mobile phone services.
A typical 100 Mbps contract will cost £25 to £40 per month. Contract periods are typically from 12 to 24 months. Most companies also have the option to keep your landline telephone number for an additional £5 to £10 per month. Note that with fibre broadband, if you have a power cut, the phone will not work unless you have your fibre router on a battery back-up system. I think that BT (and maybe others?) can provide battery backups as part of their service for ‘vulnerable’ customers.
If you want to upgrade to a fibre broadband service, first talk to your existing phone and broadband provider. They may be able to offer some prices which are lower than their advertised rates in order to keep your business.
If you live in a large or complex shaped property you may also need to get some form of WiFi extender. Many companies offer this as an option on the contract for £8 to £10 per month but you may be able to use your existing WiFi extender system, if you have one, or buy your own extender product.
