The following information was provided by D&G Councillor Dougie Campbell on Tuesday, 15th April 2025:
At the meeting of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee this morning I submitted a motion that ensures that a new bridge for Kirkcudbright is deemed a strategic priority for the Council.
The motion was that councillors agree,
‘Subject to the outcome of the refinement analysis as reported to Full Council on 27th March, and as a consequence of the short, medium and long term negative ramifications arising from the closure of Kirkcudbright Bridge, including connectivity, local tourism economy, employment and community wellbeing, that replacement crossings, temporary or permanent, are treated as a strategic priority for the council within the scope of the Capital Investment Programme 2025-2028.’
I’m pleased to say that the motion was supported without dissent by the committee. Consequently, it’s now a binding commitment by the committee to ensure that Kirkcudbright is treated as an urgent priority and not lost in the shadow of other major projects in the region.
Councillors were informed that the final outcome of additional structural reviews will be published in the coming days, and I’ll update folk on that later when it becomes available. I’m hoping however that it will give us a clearer indication on what is required, and timelines to reinstate a bridge crossing.
