D&G Council’s Road Safety team have recently been monitoring traffic speeds through the 20 mph zones in Borgue village. The results are presented below.
Following the implementation of the temporary 20 mph speed limit within Borgue in November 2023, using a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, we are now looking to advertise the permanent speed limit Order. As
part of the monitoring process, we undertake temporary traffic data surveys (undertaken in April/May 2025) to monitor compliance with the signed speed limit.
Results from 3 survey locations:
Site 1

85%ile Speed 27.0mph
7 Day Average Vehicles 530
Site 2

Site 3

Vehicle Speeds – Mean speed and 85th %ile speed (the speed at or below which 85% of vehicles are travelling) are the most commonly used measures of actual traffic speed. However, it is mean speeds that are used as the basis for determining local speed limits and compliance with the signed speed limit. Transport Scotland guidance indicates that physical traffic calming measures should only be considered where mean speeds are 25 mph and over.
We now intend to proceed with the advertising of the permanent 20 mph speed limit Order for Borgue.
