The following information was posted on Facebook by D&G Councillor Andy McFarlane on Tuesday, 6th May.
I met with officers from the council this morning at Kirkcudbright Bridge following many comments from people in the town.
We discussed options for improving safe access for pedestrians, cyclists, prams and mobility scooters as well as engagement with Police Scotland to prosecute where motorcyclists unlawfully cross the bridge.
The bridge is closed to ALL motor vehicles, including motor cycles.
I put forward a number of options and they are looking at how these can be implemented within the regulations and without compromising safety or access controls.
I also raised the issue of the signage, requesting specifically ‘Kirkcudbright is opened’ or ‘Kirkcudbright businesses open as normal’ on the routes to the town.
I discussed the signs in the town and asked if they could be changed to ‘Bridge on the right/left closed’ rather than ‘Road’ to encourage use of Bridge Street as an accessible route within the town.
I highlighted the issue of parking on the Merse side, not just at the bridge but on the verges and the estate and I was assured that these will be monitored.
If you think I or my fellow councillors can help further, we’re working together to address issues raised so get in touch – Andy.mcfarlane@dumgal.gov.uk
