William Nicholson (1783 – 1849), the “Bard of Galloway”, was born in Borgue, the youngest of 8 children. He became a poet and author, best known for his ballads about the Galloway area including “The Brownie o’ Blednoch‘ and ‘The Banks of Tarff’. There is a memorial plaque to him on the end of the Borgue Primary School building.
He is buried in Kirkandrews kirkyard.
